Be Festive: Four Tips to Decorate and Sell Your Home During the Holidays While You are Still Living There

We’ve all heard that houses don’t sell during the holidays. Sure, things do slow down; however, houses are still shown throughout November, December and January and many DO sell. Stage your home to be as appealing as possible during this celebratory time of year. Here are four tips that will allow you to enjoy time with family and friends and still optimize for sale. Even if your home isn’t on the market, these tips will help you to have your most beautiful holiday.

 1. Clean and Curate. It’s normal for many to clean and organize before taking out the holiday ornaments and decorations. Do a thorough cleaning and put away excessive accessories and dust books and shelves. Remove extra furniture to make way for seasonal pieces. Take a look at your entertaining spaces with a fresh eye: would the tree show better in front of the french doors instead of in a corner? Would the sofa be better positioned facing the tree? As we always say, people want to walk into your home and feel like they could live their best lives there. Curate your seasonal décor. Edit, edit, edit. Put out half – or less! – of what you might normally do. Feel like too much to do? Do you know that Staged Ryte can do all of this for you?

2. Consider a color theme. To make an immediate first impression when visitors – including potential buyers – walk into your home, choose and stick with a color palette. If you decorate for Christmas, narrow down the different reds, greens, golds and silvers to a single-color scheme of greens OR cool reds OR just gold and silver. This will create a soothing and sophisticated impression.

3. Merry and bright: Lighting is important no matter what time of year you list your home. In the bleak mid-winter, it’s even more important. If you do a Christmas tree, put those old multi-colored lights away and load up the tree with white lights. Put those lights up in other locations too; the apple tree in the front yard; the two evergreens in pots on either side of your front door. Invest in high-quality battery-operated candles that can be “lit” for hours with no fear of fire.

4. Consider winter wonderland instead of holiday specific.  Minimize the holiday-specific decorations and stage with a winter theme. Snowflakes, pine trees, nests and sleds in natural materials are charming without indicating one holiday. This décor can be more inclusive feeling to appeal to a wider range of prospective buyers.
